Mission to Seafarers

Our People

Seafarers face many dangers as they bring to you and I, ninety percent of what we will use in our daily lives. The threat of piracy and other reasons, why their ship may not safely reach port, are ever-present concerns. The Mission to Seafarers (MTS), through its many alliances around the world, offers the seafarer a home from home, an opportunity to communicate with loved ones and rest and relaxation whilst in port. The Mission to Seafarers ensures the spiritual and physical wellbeing of seafarers, as well as assisting them with social justice issues.

The Mission to Seafarers in Africa has Flying Angel centres in the major South African ports (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Saldanha Bay, Durban and Richards Bay), Walvis Bay, Mombasa, Lagos, Liberia and Dar Es Salaam.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is the second largest town in Namibia next to the capital Windhoek which is 400km away.

It is the only deep water port in Namibia. It is regarded as a hub port. Namibia is on the left hand side of Africa sandwiched between the Republic of South Africa and Angola. Botswana is on the right hand side. We often get asked “where are we?” by seafarers, strangely enough, who often have not got a clue where they are in Africa.

Eucharist Service held every Sunday in the chapel at 18h00h.
